Our Math Focus for November 30th-December 8th!

In our last unit we worked on adding two digit numbers in our heads. This next unit, we will work on subtracting double digit numbers in our head. Below you will find some examples of strategies we will use to help us solve these problems mentally.

Subtracting tens and ones:

55-20= 35

55 45 35
     10 10

64-23= 41

64 54 44 43 42 41
     10 10  1   1   1

Adding on to find the missing part:

55-20= 35

20+__=55

20 30 40 50 55
     10 10 10  5 = 35

64-23= 41

23+__= 64

23 33 43 53 63 64
     10 10 10 10  1= 41

Math Focus for November 16th-27th!

We just finished learning about counting money and now we will start Unit 6 which focuses on learning how to add double digit equations in our heads.

We will learn how to add 10 to double digits...for example 51+10= or 51+30= The kids will learn to count on and add the tens. 51+10= 51 add 1 ten would be 61! 51+30= 51 add 3 tens would be 61, 71, 81!

We will also learn how to add tens and ones to a double digit number. 51+15= 51 add 1 ten would be 61 and then add 5 ones would be  62, 63, 64, 65, 66! Or 51+35=  51 add 3 tens would be 61, 71, 81. Then add 5 ones. 82, 83, 84, 85, 86!

I know this may look confusing. Hard to describe this wonderful strategy on a website! Make sure you look at how your kids did their lessons and try to teach it the same way on their homework!
