Welcome Letter!

Dear Parents/Guardians,
My name is Carrie Reinking and I would like to welcome your child to Second Grade. This is my 6th year of teaching at Pleasant Hill Elementary, and my 7th year of teaching second grade. I am originally from Myrtle Creek, Oregon. I received my Master’s of Education degree in Teaching and Learning at the University of Oregon. I live with my husband Ryan and our miniature wiener dog AJ in Springfield, Oregon. I am currently six months pregnant with our son Noah. He is due December 19th. Just so you are aware, I will be taking the rest of the year off after Christmas break. Shelby, who is currently Mrs. Wolpe’s substitute till Christmas break, will move down to my class after the break. She is very capable and I know the kids will love her. I will come by and visit.
I am looking forward to getting to know both you, and your child, these few months. These second grade students will achieve much this year in terms of academic growth, greater self-confidence, and improved social skills. Good communication between parent, teacher, and student is very important for your child’s academic growth.
I would like to briefly discuss my homework policy with you. I will be sending your child home with a folder on Fridays and I expect them to turn it back into me the following Friday. The homework will focus on math, spelling, and reading. Here are a few more details on what the homework entails:
  • Math:  The kids will be working on practice lessons that we have worked on during the week. If you think they can finish assignment before the lesson is taught you may try it.
  • Reading: They will need to read 100 minutes at home each week. Please fill out the reading form. Please write in the date, book title, and how long you read it for. Please sign the bottom of the form. I will not accept the reading minutes if the paper is not signed by an adult. If they receive 100 minutes each week I will provide a fun surprise! If you do not have time to fill out this form, a call or email on Friday to let me know how many minutes they read is fine too. I want them to receive their prize for completing their reading minutes.
  • Spelling/Vocabulary: We focus on a set of spelling words each week. Each spelling list focuses on a certain sound. Please practice these words with your child each night. If you need some creative ideas on making studying spelling words more engaging, I can provide you with a few ideas. We also focus on a few vocabulary words each week. They need to understand what the word means and be able to read it when they see it in a story. Please practice these at home as well.
The purpose of homework is two-fold: to reinforce what we have learned in class, and to teach responsibility. A child who has done their homework is prepared, in class, to hear explanations of what they had trouble with at home. A child without their homework done loses twice—both in learning through reinforcement, and in listening to explanations in class. I am also trying to help them develop good work habits for future years. If you have any questions about homework don’t hesitate to ask!
I also have Lucky Duck (Star of the week.) I will be sending their Lucky Duck poster home on Friday in their homework folder and they need to bring it back, filled out and completed, on Monday, after the weekend. On Monday, the Lucky Duck will share their poster with the class. On Tuesday, I would like to read a letter written by you to them. I will be reading it to the whole class so have fun with it J On Wednesday; they will read their favorite book to the class. If they do not want to read it, I can read it too. On Thursday, they will get a special lunch. If you can make it in for this it would be wonderful. You can bring in their favorite meal and eat with them. If you are unable to make it this day we can set up another day. If you are unable to make it any time, I will provide a fun meal for them. On Friday, we take down their Lucky Duck poster and they get to take it home. The kids will go in alphabetical order by name. We will start this the third week of school. I will send the poster and a small letter giving all the details of their lucky week!
I am available to meet with parents EVERY day, after school from 2:20-3:30. Unfortunately, I am not able to meet with parents before school starts in the morning, as students are coming in then, and they need all of my attention. For parents who use e-mail, I normally check my e-mail daily, and this is often the quickest, and most efficient way to get in touch with me, or to discuss any of your concerns. I will respond promptly. Please feel free to e-mail me any time, at: creinking@pleasanthill.k12.or.us. If you need to contact me directly my phone number is 541-868-7391.
I have attached a Parent Questionnaire. This will allow me to see what kind of ways you are interested in helping out in the classroom! I will need all sorts of help, from leading small reading groups and math groups, helping with computer lab, chaperoning on field trips and parties, to making copies and any projects I may need completed. I am also looking for a parent to help with Rocket math. Please fill it out and get it back to me as soon as you can! I will call you directly and set up days and times for you to come in and lend a wonderful hand.
If you have any special questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to come in any time; or send me a note with your child in the morning, or by e-mail; or set up a conference.
Sincerely,

Carrie Reinking
